Best Laptops 2010 - Toshiba Portege R705-515 Review

Best Laptops 2010

Toshiba Portege R705 is a 13.3 inch ultraportable laptop which is one of the best laptops 2010 and has a bit of processing power, a very nice design and all things considered offers better performance than most other ultraportable machines of similar size you can buy these days. The construction is of high quality and it’s rigid, offering a good feel of a solid machine that doesn’t weigh much. It has only 3.2 pounds, which makes it quite portable, despite the size. The designers at Toshiba worked the outside to their liking but the interior of the machine was not overlooked either.

The build quality offers you a feeling that this is a solid machine, even though it’s so light, something that other laptops don’t offer.

The laptop’s keyboard is a tile layout model, which is resistant to light spills, so you will still have issues if you pour an entire bottle on it, but it should be OK with light water or coffee spills.

The Toshiba Portege R705 has on the left edge a HDMI output, e combo USB 2.0/eSATA port, VGA output, AC input socket, USB 2.0 ports, all on the left edge. The right edge has the second USB 2.0 port, Ethernet, headphone jack, audio input, SD card slot and the DVD writer. The rear and front parts of the laptop are free from any ports.

Looking at the hardware inside the machine we notice a i5-460M processor which is quite decent and 4GB of RAM, which make up for the lower quality integrated graphics. As long as you’re looking to do mostly Office tasks on it, this machine is up to the task. You can also play Full HD videos at 1080p quality, without killing the performance of the machine in the process. The laptop also offers very good Wi-Fi performances and the battery life can be extended by quickly deactivating features like Wi-Fi or changing the brightness of the screen from the top bar which appears in Windows 7.

When we compared the Portege R705 with its competitors, the laptop did very well, even better than we expected from a laptop of this configuration and price. The ultra portability of the laptop wouldn’t give you much hope for performance in general, but the R705 does quite well.

When it comes to value for money the R705 offers quite a bit of speed, especially at this price point. The price is very good for a 13.3 inch model that is ultraportable, with a weight of just 3.2 pounds that includes a DVD writer and offers good multimedia performances.

If you want to do some light gaming on it, it’s possible, with lower details chosen and avoiding the games that are recently launched and with high specs. Quake Wars and Half Life 2 are two examples of games that will do well on this machine.

If you’re looking for an ultramobile laptop, the Toshiba Portege R705 13.3 inch laptop gets our recommendation. The manufacturer was careful about the small details, the design is nice, the build quality is good and the performances are decent considering how portable the machine is.
